The International Art Gallery “Elite Patronage” founded in Torgau (Germany, Saxony) by Dagmara Nawratek invites art lovers to a phenomenal virtual exhibition by German artist Barbara Heier-Rainer entitled “Hand & Werk”. The theme is of utmost current significance and arouses a lot of emotion, as it touches on the recently pressing issue of artificial intelligence, raises the question of replacing manual dexterity with machines, and draws attention to the importance of the hand, which is the artist`s tool.

Barbara Heier-Rainer is a highly creative and active artist who has already made her mark on the art arena with numerous successful exhibitions. Her impressive works can be found in private collections in Switzerland, Belgium, France, California, USA, and Germany. In 2024, her outstanding talent was honored with the Kelkheim Cultural Prize. Her thought-provoking group of works entitled “Hand & Werk”, currently presented virtually by the International Art Gallery “Elite Patronage”, was created at the turn of 2024/25 and explores the expression of hands using various techniques. Worldwide visitors can admire paintings created with acrylic paints, digital prints, collages, as well as original drawings. The right technique, composition, and color scheme influence the expressiveness of the artworks.

On her website www.heierkunst.de, the artist reminds us that the hand is humanity`s oldest and most versatile tool. She also asks whether we are living in an age of hand oblivion, in which handwriting and manual dexterity are disappearing as machines and artificial intelligence replace the functions of the hand. The artist draws attention to the role that the hand plays in communication, supporting verbal statements with appropriate gestures, and sometimes even having to replace language entirely.

“Another important function is feeling. It`s not for nothing that we talk about understanding”, notes Heier-Rainer, quoting Goethe from “Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre”: “Everyone has their own happiness in their hands, just as an artist has raw material that he wants to transform into a form. But art is like everything else; only the ability to do it is innate, it must be learned and carefully practiced.”

The artist has been exploring the subject of hands since her student days. “When I meet other people, I look at their hands; they say a lot about them”, confesses Heier-Rainer.

By drawing hands, she studies their anatomy and the expression that different movements give them. Unfortunately, many of these sketches have been lost, but her fascination with the subject has remained unchanged.

The International Art Gallery “Elite Patronage” is honored to present this moving and reflective collection today making it available to a global audience, as one of the advantages of virtual art galleries is the ability to share artworks to a wide range of connoisseurs, without location restrictions and without the need for admission tickets. After all, it is worth noting that these modern platforms equalize opportunities and level the playing field in terms of access to culture, integrate, engage, and enable active participation, which is extremely important not only for residents of small towns but also for people who are ill, disabled or elderly. The internet and modern technologies allow free and easy exploration of art resources, eliminating social, transport, and architectural barriers.

“The digitization of cultural and artistic heritage not only allows us to protect works of art from loss or oblivion but also removes geographical barriers and physical space limitations. Virtual art galleries are not a temporary trend. They operate with modern tools that are revolutionizing access to culture, permanently transforming the quality of our contemporary engagement with culture. The digital space is beneficial both for artists, offering them new forms of promotion, and for visitors, providing them with unprecedented aesthetic experiences, combining education and entertainment” states CEO and founder of the International Art Gallery “Elite Patronage” Dagmara Nawratek.
